How payroll software pricing works
Almost every provider charges two things: a monthly base fee and a per-person fee for each employee or contractor you pay. A low base fee can still cost more once you add people, so compare the total for your actual headcount.
- Full service vs. self-file. Full-service plans calculate, file and pay your payroll taxes for you. Self-file plans cost less, but you handle tax filings yourself.
- Plan upgrades. Features like time tracking or multi-state payroll often require a higher plan, which can double the cost.
- Introductory discounts. Many providers discount the first few months. Budget for the regular price.
